Nestled in the quiet river valley of Bristol, New York, four craftsmen are busy as bees at a mom-and-pop pipe organ workshop, called Parsons. They each reflect on their life and work to a documentary film crew (who are largely offscreen) as the workshop draws near to completing its most recent commission. Derek Bommelje is our primary builder. He has all the knowledge and fun facts about the pipe organ’s history and how it operates. Lane Priest, a younger guy, is the resident wiring expert and class clown. The two other builders, Jake Koelling and Travis Tones, are less chatty and express their enjoyment of the craft in a more laid-back manner. These four bring their own special something to the building process, and the broader Parsons cohort of craftspeople. Once they are finished assembling the organ, they open up the shop for the local community to admire. One visitor, with his grandson in tow, describes the delight of having such a treasure of talent in their neighborhood backyard. Derek and Lane share the pleasure of watching people who only see the face of an organ look behind in awe at the breadth of precisely placed pipes (2934 total). One last visitor, Bob Green–who plays the organ for much of the open house–delineates on the universality of music, and the relationship building of beautiful art.
